The solutions to bring to the visual problems that you can meet depend on numerous factors:

The target public: The images you present must be adapted to the aimed public. An engineer or an architect will understand easily the plans, details and technical sketch of design of a project. On the other hand, a citizen having no knowledge in the concerned domain will be certainly incapable to represent himself the project only by viewing these documents.
The information you want to transmit: It's possible to pass numerous messages through an illustration. Whether it is for the emotional level or for the intellectual level. Do you want to give an atmosphere to your project or to demonstrate its equivalence to its environment?
The delays: Implementations of quality displays is a process which takes time. Some techniques or styles (simplistic or artistic for example) can go very fast but the production of photo-realistic images is a complex process. If the allocated delays are too short, it will be necessary to turn to alternate techniques, to choose a less realistic style or to reduce the resolution of the image.
The budget: The price of an image depends almost essentially on operator's amount of time needed to realize it. In the case of the animations and the photo-realistic images, the time of calculation of the frames is taken into account. If the budget is low, the operator cannot spend a lot of time on thework and the time of calculation of an animation must be reduced at most.
The level of detail: According to the usage which will be made by the image, details can be indispensable, useful, or inopportune. Show too many details (and\or in a too realistic way) during the primary stages of a concept risk to freeze the project in the mind of the customer or to emphasize details without having a global vision. On the other hand, for a final presentation, it is the precision of the detail that gives it real aspect and underlines the style of the designer.
The quality: According to the objective to achieve: to explain, to convince or to seduce, the wished quality can vary from an axonometric perspective with hidden faces to a photorealistic depiction with reflections, refraction, special effects in post-production and addition of elements of atmosphere.
The final support of presentation: An image intended to be displayed in low resolution and with a compression ratio mattering on a Web site does not require so much work as an image of promotion printed on a panel of several square meters. It is important to determine early the biggest format of presentation for the image. To enlarge an image creates an ugly pixelization (the appearance of a raster of squares or a jaggies in an image further to a geometrical transformation)...
